📚 What Is PDF/A, and Why Does It Matter?
- A long-term archiving standard — ISO 19005. The document opens identically even 50 years from now.
- Required for e-invoicing in many countries — tax authorities often require PDF/A-3b for electronic invoice PDFs.
- Government archives: public institutions frequently require PDF/A for accepted documents.
- Legal and judicial systems: many e-filing platforms recommend the PDF/A standard.
- Court records: PDF/A is the preferred format for judicial archives.
⚠️ Limitations
- This conversion adds basic PDF/A metadata + an XMP stream. For full compliance validation, we recommend checking the result with VeraPDF.
- Embedded fonts are preserved if present. System fonts (Helvetica, etc.) work without issues.
- Encrypted PDFs must be decrypted first (use our Remove PDF Password tool).
- PDF/A-1b is the most restrictive — PDFs with transparency, JavaScript, or layers should be converted to PDF/A-2b or 3b instead.
