📚 What Is PDF/A, and Why Does It Matter?

• A long-term archiving standard — ISO 19005. The document opens identically even 50 years from now.
• Required for e-invoicing in many countries — tax authorities often require PDF/A-3b for electronic invoice PDFs.
• Government archives: public institutions frequently require PDF/A for accepted documents.
• Legal and judicial systems: many e-filing platforms recommend the PDF/A standard.
• Court records: PDF/A is the preferred format for judicial archives.

⚠️ What this tool actually guarantees — and what it does not

• Added for real: ISO 19005 metadata + XMP stream, a genuine OutputIntent with an embedded sRGB ICC profile (not just a metadata flag), and removal of JavaScript actions (document/page-level /AA, /Names/JavaScript, JS OpenAction).
• Not verified or rewritten: font embedding completeness, color-space consistency inside the page content, and prohibited low-level constructs (e.g. LZW compression) are not inspected or corrected. If the source PDF already violates these, the output will too.
• This is not a substitute for validation. Full ISO 19005 conformance can only be confirmed with an independent validator — we recommend checking the result with veraPDF before relying on it for legal/archival submission.
• Encrypted PDFs are rejected outright — decrypt first with our Remove PDF Password tool.
• PDF/A-1b forbids transparency; if we detect transparency in the source file for that profile we surface a warning instead of silently producing a non-conformant file (flattening transparency correctly requires a full rendering engine, which this client-side tool does not have).
